In 1978 & 1979, when I broke my first two Guinness world records at pinball endurance, I wanted to have a special way to thank all of my friends and supporters for hanging in there with me and helping me make my dreams come true, so I decided to write them a love song.

This turned out to be the hardest song I have ever had to write. A love song to over 200 people that was meant to be a one-on-one…from me to each and every person who helped me through every peak and valley I encountered.

Thanks to my wonderful old friend Phil Kaye and new friend Roger White and the staff at Sony Music Studios for making the studio time possible and to my dear friend John “Tokes” Potoker for coming in and engineering, mixing and co-producing this song with me.

The musicians who played on this cut did so out of their love for me and I will forever be indebted to them.

  • Stevie Gurr–Acoustic guitar
  • Joe Scruggs–Acoustic guitar
  • Jay Dee Maness–Pedal Steel Guitar (Electric Table)
  • Freebo–Electric Bass
  • Bob Leatherbarrow–Drums & Percussion
  • Mandi Martin–Piano & Vocals

A few months before recording began, my cousins Diana and Evan introduced me to a wonderful woman, Renee DePalma. She is an accomplished film and documentary maker and she saw something in my story that lit a spark and she decided to get involved with my life and this event. When I told her about my plans to one day write a book about my marathoning experience and that I wanted to call it “It Takes A Lot Of Balls,” she told me that she would love to use the title for the documentary.

I thought, “cool!” And so it was born!

I co-wrote the title song for the documentary and co-produced the track with my dear friend and writing partner, Robin Bolden. Robin has been a true blessing in my life. He keeps me on my toes!

Thanks to the generosity of Seth Cohen and SolarCrest Studio for the engineering and studio time and John “Tokes” Potoker who came in and helped with the mix, we were able to get this cut finished in time for the CD. Once again, there are several talented musicians who were there for me at a moment’s notice and hit the ball out of the park for me.

  • Seth Cohen–Acoustic & Electric Guitars & Drums
  • Verne Monnett–Dobro & Pedal Steel Guitar
  • Robin Bolden–Background Vocals & Keyboard
  • Chad Watson–Bass
  • Peter Klimes–Bass Background Vocals
  • Mandi Martin–Lead Vocal & Background Vocals

And special thanks to Nancy Matter & Moonlight Mastering and Dave Rubenstein & Cinram for making the CD possible in the first place.

God Bless You All.
